Lying on the southwesterly side of the United States and directly west of New Mexico, the sunny state of Arizona is full of exceptional attractions, many of which are just a relatively short journey from Sedona. The attractions of Flagstaff are just under 30 miles / 48 km to the north of Sedona, being less than an hour's drive away and therefore perfect for a day trip.

At little further from Sedona is the Grand Canyon and its spectacular panoramas, and the capital of Arizona, Phoenix, which has become something of a sprawling metropolis. Slightly nearer to home are the historical towns of both Jerome and Prescott.


Flagstaff

Located on the southerly side of the San Francisco Peaks, the city of Flagstaff stands on the Colorado Plateau. Many attractions in Flagstaff line the former Route 66, which is today known as the Santa Fe Avenue and runs alongside the Interstate I-40. In recent years, tourism has become a major part of Flagstaff and attractions range from the Lowell Observatory, Riordan Mansion State Historic Park, the Museum of Northern Arizona, the Sunset Crater Volcano Monument, the Walnut Canyon National Monument, and the Wupatki National Monument, the latter of which is home to some ancient pueblos.

Grand Canyon

Famous all over the world for its exceptional natural scenery and seemingly endless views, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon stands some 108 miles / 174 km to the north of the Sedona. Helicopter tours are a great way to view the Grand Canyon and can last up to 90 minutes, while various excellent lookout points are scattered along the North Rim Drive, such as the Bright Angel Point and the Vermilion Cliffs. On the South Rim, attractions include the rather elegant El Tovar Hotel, Mather Point and the Powell Monument.

Jerome

Formerly an important copper-mining town in the 1800s, Jerome is situated approximately 27 miles / 43 km southwest of Sedona. Although the copper mines of Jerome closed in the 1950s, the town is now recognized as a National Historic District and enjoys a stunning setting, being perched on the side of a mountain, where its houses almost appear as if they are going to slide down the steep slopes. Various gift shops and art galleries are worth a look, as is the Jerome State Historic Park.

Phoenix

A city famed for its consistent warm weather and sunny days, Phoenix is growing at a tremendous pace. Phoenix is Arizona's capital city and at around 116 miles / 187 km to the south of Sedona, is just about close enough to make a day trip excursion possible, if you are prepared for an early start or late return. Those arriving in Phoenix will discover a truly diverse selection of awaiting attractions, such as the Chase Field Ballpark, the exciting Castles -n- Coasters theme park, the family orientated Phoenix Zoo, the architectural school of Taliesin West, the Historic Heritage Square, and the Wrigley 'Chewing Gum' Mansion.

Prescott

Prescott was the earliest territorial capital and boasts an appealing cowboy heritage and atmosphere. The Wild West attractions of Prescott surround the downtown Courthouse Plaza and the Whiskey Row. The Palace Restaurant and Bar on Montezuma Street is a good place to enjoy a bite to eat, while for accommodation, look along Cortez Street. Prescott is roughly 59 miles / 95 km to the southwest of Sedona and by road, is just under 90 minutes away.
